Besides crossing the border to visit Silver City, Idaho, Eric's photographs outside of Oregon began in 2011, when he spent a summer in Utah before moving to Southern Oregon. Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) began work here in 1862. The 2-story Territorial Enterprise building was rebuilt after the 1875 fire but the basement was undamaged including Mark Twain's desk, composing tables and more.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Winnemucca 2011

Hilario Lecumberry, a Basque sheep rancher, was struck by lightning and killed near Jungo, Nevada, on May 28, 1934. Lecumberry was on an isolated desert trail 3 miles from his Willow Creek ranch en route to his sheep camp. After one of his pack animals returned to the ranch, the sheriff organized a search party, which discovered Lecumberry's body.

This is the general location of the now vanished dry lake ghost town of Jungo, which was photographed by an unknown photographer for Life Magazine in August 1936 (the year Life Magazine started), but the photos were not published in any Life Magazine issues from 1936. The interesting Great Depression-era photos are available on Google Arts and Culture and show the Western Pacific Railroad depot, Jungo Hotel, blacksmith shop, interior of the general store and post office (both located inside the hotel), and more from this western town, surreally built on a playa. Jungo began in 1910 as a railroad depot, where cattle and sheep from district ranches were shipped annually. The post office was in operation from 1911 until 1952, and the population in 1940 was 50 people. The Google Arts and Culture gallery also contains a few photographs from Carson City (including its former Chinatown) and the Jumbo gold mine (owned by the Jungo hotel proprietor George B. Austin), but the photos do not have individual captions identifying their location, and they are mixed together. This is the link for the photo gallery:
